First Ward (Uptown)
First Ward is bounded by E. Trade, North Tryon and John Belk Freeway. While it used to be home to Earle Village, one of Charlotte's most poor and crime ridden areas of uptown, it has been revitalized by a $41.6 Million HUD Hope IV grant. Now First Ward is home to many new condo and single family developments, including Tivoli, Garden District Row, Skyline Terrace, Alexander Court, Tenth Street Condos, Cityview Lofts, Cityview Townes, The Corners, Alexanders on 9th, The Caldwells on 9th, Courtside, Court 6, Enclave, and Quarterside.
Over the next few years, First ward will be redeveloped even more. The new Bobcats Arena in First Ward helped spur more commercial development as well. Plans have already been announced to build a "Sierra Suites" adjacent to the arena. Other buildings either under construction or soon to be built include a 150,000 sq. ft. building for UNCC, a Ritz Carlton Hotel, and a new Bank of America Tower.
Keep an eye out for the new condo development, Encore, coming soon. This development will incorporate both the Carolina Theatre with a condo building that will include vehicle elevators allowing owners to park and walk literally steps to their condo.
Second Ward (Uptown)
Second Ward is separated by East Trade, South Tryon and John Belk Freeway. It is currently home to most of the goverment buildings in Uptown Charlotte, but will also go through a dramatic transformation over the coming years.
The Nascar Hall of Fame is currently under construction and should be complete in 2010. Also well underway in the block that used to be home to the Charlotte Convention Center is Epicentre Entertainment Complex. Epicentre will open later in 2008 and some of the tenants include:
Howl at the Moon ~ Dueling Piano themed Club
Black Fin ~ Irish Themed Pub & Restaurant
Whiskey River ~ Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s Restaurant & Bar

The Fudgery
Cold Stone ~ Ice Cream Store

In addition to these tenants, there will also be a boutique Starwood Hotel, aLoft.
Second Ward will also have a pretty big increase in residents with the addition of 210 Trade, One Charlotte, The Park, The Tower, The Trust, and Brooklyn Village. If that doesn't give one enough options to choose from in terms of a new home, there are also plans for Donald Trump to build a condo/office building in 2nd Ward.
Third Ward (Uptown)
Third Ward is an area that has also gone through quite a transformation in recent years, but still has many plans for both residential and commercial development. Currently 3rd Ward is home to Johnson and Wales University and Bank of America Stadium (home of the Carolina Panthers).
Residential buildings planned for 3rd Ward include 300 South Tryon, Catalyst, Morehead Common, Twelve Charlotte and Wachovia condos.
New residences built within the last year that are now complete are Trademark, Skybox Townhomes, Gallery Lofts, and First Row at 3rd Ward.
While there are many condos to choose from that have been completed within the last year and many more to be completed within the next few years, Third Ward also has a good selection of homes and condos that are a bit older and have a lot of character.
Lastly, Third Ward will have a park constructed and plans are well underway to build a minor league baseball stadium to house the Charlotte Knights.
Fourth Ward (Uptown)
Fourth Ward contains some of the oldest residences in Center City Charlotte. Planners have done an excellent job of mixing the 100+ year old homes with newer condo developments. Some of the newer condo developments in 4th Ward include 626 North Graham, 715 North Church, 701 North Church, 400 North Church, Avenue, The Vue, The Citadin, and Garrison at Graham. Fourth Ward is also home to Alexander Michael's, a great local restaurant housed in an old home.
Depending on price range, fourth ward has many options whether you are looking for a condo, home or townhome.
Chantilly
Another area that is seeing large remodels and tear-down/re-builds is Chantilly. This neighborhood is contained between 7th Street, Pecan, and Independence Blvd. In recent years, many of the original, roughly 1000 square feet ranch homes have been either completely torn down or expanded. Because of the relatively low amount of traffic and on-street parking, the neighborhood is very walkable.
Even better is Chantilly's close proximity to restaurants and bars in Midwood including The Penguin, Nova Bakery, Thomas Street Tavern, Dish, Zada Jane's, Fuel Pizza and an original Dairy Queen. Since Chantilly is wedged between Midwood and Elizabeth, you also have restaurants and bars within half a mile in the Elizabeth neighborhood that are an easy walk. In Elizabeth, some of the neighborhood bars and restaurants that locals frequent include Starbucks, Jackalope Jacks, Cajun Queen, Showmars, Philosopher's Stone, Anntony's Carribean Cafe, and Substation II. With all of these restaurants within such close proximity, you won't want to cook at home!
Cotswold
Cotswold is the area around the intersection of Randolph Rd. and Sharon Amity. It is named after the outdoor shopping mall, Cotswold. This shopping center has gone through a pretty major over-haul and remodel in the past few years and has added many new stores and restaurants.
Homes in the area tend to be built on larger homesites and were built in the 50's and 60's. As a result, the homes are being remodeled to be updated with modern finishes.

Myers Park
Myers Park is one of neighborhoods that people flock to because of the large homes and homesites. It is also covers a rather large geographic area with huge, established trees. It is home to Freedom Park, (look for link) one of Charlotte's most popular parks. Most homes in Myers Park are larger than in other neighborhoods close to Uptown. The architecture seems to be quite a bit different than many of the bungalow neighborhoods as well. The typical home in Myers Park is either a one or two story brick home from 1500 square feet up to 7000 square feet. While those are the
typical home characteristics, you will find other homes or condos that break that mold.
Another draw for people that move to Myers Park is the close proximity to shopping. The neighborhood is adjacent to Park Road Shopping center. This shopping center is anchored by a Harris Teeter grocery store and Michael's, but is home to quite a few other convenient shops. If Myers Park residents want even more shopping, Southpark mall is only a 5 minute drive away. Many consider Southpark to be one of the nicest malls in the southeast.
Midtown
No-Da
Plaza-Midwood
Plaza-Midwood is located a couple minutes northeast of Uptown Charlotte. The homes in this neighborhood are mostly bungalows. Over the past five years, this neighborhood has attracted more and more buyers in search of older homes with character. Homesites in midwood tend to be a little larger than those in Chantilly and Elizabeth. However, the homes in Midwood are seeing the same type of remodeling and re-building as are present in other nieghborhoods close to uptown Charlotte.
This neighborhood is rather large in comparison to adjoining Elizabeth and Chantilly and is bisected by "The Plaza"
Southend
Sedgefield
Sedgefield is located between Park Road and South Boulevard, just south of Dilworth. While some homes in Sedgefield have been updated and remodeled, they're not as prevalent as in some of the other neighborhoods within a five mile radius of center city Charlotte. However, homesites in Sedgefield are larger in comparison with the exception of Myers Park. As a result, Sedgefield makes a good choice for buyers searching for an affordable home that they can expand with square footage at a later date. The homes in Sedgefield have a lot of character and definitely don't fit a typical mold. They vary between one and two story homes with the majoritybeing ranch style homes.
Wilmore
Wilmore is just Southwest of center city Charlotte. In recent years, many trailblazers have entered the neighborhood and remodeled homes to update them with new interior and exterior finishes. While home values were some of the lowest in the area up to a couple of years ago, they are now beginning to increase as the area improves with all of the remodeling. As with many of the neighborhoods close to uptown Charlotte, homes in Wilmore tend to be small bungalow style unless they have been remodeled. Over the next few years, this neighborhood should continue to see growth in appreciation.
Wesley Heights
Wesley Heights is probably one of the best kept secrets for neighborhoods close to Charlotte's core. This neighborhood has quietly seen appreciation rates increase by both homes being remodeled and new multifamily developments like Lela Court, and Grandin View being built. This neighborhood is also close to third Ward and uptown's emerging West Morehead corridor. Because of its close proximity to West Morehead, values of the property in Wesley Heights should also continue to grow as West Morehead's commercial and residential developments come to fruition.
